Legacy to Enterprise Migration FAQs

This document provides an overview of the Legacy to Enterprise migration program, including what to expect, how customers are selected, and how we support you through the process.

What is the Legacy to Enterprise migration?

The migration program enables customers to transition their data and workflows from the Legacy portal to the Enterprise portal using migration tooling developed by the Turnitin Product team.

This program is a key part of our broader platform strategy to unify the customer experience, improve scalability, and ensure alignment with evolving compliance and accessibility standards.

Who is currently eligible for migration?

At this time, we are prioritizing migrations for customers with external drivers, including:

  • Accessibility requirements
  • Security and compliance standards (e.g., TX-RAMP)
  • Other regulatory or institutional mandates

This targeted approach allows us to focus resources where urgency and risk are highest, while continuing to refine and scale the migration experience.

If you are unsure whether your institution meets these criteria, please contact your Customer Success Manager.

What is the Enterprise portal?

The Enterprise portal is ExamSoft’s modern platform, first released in 2017 and currently used by over 1,000 institutions.

While it maintains many familiar features from Legacy, Enterprise offers:

  • A more streamlined and intuitive workflow for exam creation
  • Improved accessibility
  • Enhanced scalability for future enhancements
  • Stronger alignment with security and compliance standards

Will customers still be able to use the Legacy portal after migrating?

No. Once migration is complete, customers will use the Enterprise portal exclusively.

Why are customers being moved off the Legacy portal?

Turnitin is investing in the Enterprise platform as the long-term solution to support evolving customer needs.

Maintaining Legacy alongside Enterprise increases operational complexity and limits our ability to deliver improvements efficiently. Consolidating onto Enterprise allows us to provide a more consistent, scalable, and future-ready experience.

When will the Legacy portal be sunset?

We are working toward a phased retirement of the Legacy portal over the coming years.

Migration will continue in segments based on:

  • External drivers and urgency
  • Customer readiness
  • Tooling capacity
  • Product roadmap and feature gaps

We will continue to communicate timelines and expectations as the program evolves.

What are the benefits of migrating to Enterprise?

Enterprise provides:

  • Improved accessibility and usability
  • A more streamlined user experience
  • Greater scalability for future enhancements
  • Stronger compliance with modern security standards

How will customers be supported during migration?

We currently provide a structured, high-touch onboarding experience to ensure a smooth transition.

Support includes:

  • A dedicated onboarding consultant
  • Live sessions as needed (check-ins, validation support)
  • Access to on-demand training and documentation
  • Migration Hub resources to centralize key materials

How long does a migration take?

The data migration itself takes place over a number of hours. However, the recommended migration project timeline is approximately 12 weeks from kickoff to completion.

This includes:

  • Preparation and data audit
  • Enterprise portal setup
  • Migration execution
  • Post-migration validation

Timelines may vary depending on:

  • Institutional complexity
  • Team availability

What data is migrated?

The migration tooling supports the transfer of the following artifacts:

  • Questions
  • Assessments
  • Courses
  • Categories
  • Pre-assessment notices
  • Student users
  • Faculty users
  • Historical performance data

What are content banks?

Content banks allow users to organize and categorize content within the Enterprise portal, similar to how categories are used in Legacy. Think of them as Enterprise’s “folder” structure. Following migration, you’ll find your Question and Assessment folders in parallel Content Banks in Enterprise.

For more information, refer to our Content Banks guides.

What does the migration process look like?

Customers preparing for migration will:

  1. Complete on-demand Enterprise training
  2. Audit and organize their Legacy data (optional)
  3. Align on a migration date with their onboarding consultant

During migration:

  • A mandatory 3-day blackout period will be observed
  • Users must refrain from accessing either portal during this time to ensure data integrity

We strongly recommend scheduling migrations during a natural break in your academic or operational calendar (e.g., between semesters).

After migration:

  • Your team will complete validation checks to confirm a successful transition
  • Our team will support troubleshooting and final readiness
