Examplify: Unable to Retrieve Institution List Error (With Video)

Problem

When you open Examplify to log in or register, the app needs to connect to the internet to pull up your institution's name. If the name isn't appearing in the dropdown menu, or if you get an explicit error stating "Unable to retrieve institution list," it means something is blocking Examplify's connection to our servers.

Follow the steps below based on the device you are using to get connected.

Procedure

  • Video Guide
  • Windows & Mac Troubleshooting
    • Disconnect from VPNs & Proxies
    • Switch Networks
    • Check Antivirus & Security Software

Windows & Mac Troubleshooting

1. Disconnect from VPNs and Proxies

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and proxy servers route your internet traffic through secure tunnels that can block Examplify’s communication.

  • Turn off any active VPNs (like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or school-issued connection tools).
  • Check your computer's taskbar or system tray to ensure they aren't still running secretly in the background.

2. Switch Networks (Bypass Firewalls)

Strict campus, workplace, or public Wi-Fi networks use strong firewalls to block background data transfers.

  • If you are on a campus or work network, look for alternative secure networks or connect your computer to a mobile hotspot on your phone. You can also try again when you are able to connect to your home Wi-Fi.
  • If the list loads on a hotspot or alternative network, the original network's configuration or restrictions could be the problem.

3. Check Antivirus and Security Software

Sometimes, personal antivirus software can flag Examplify's network activity.

  • Open your antivirus or Windows Defender settings.
  • Check the "Allowed Apps" or firewall settings and ensure Examplify is granted full access to the network.

Once you have checked these two items, close Examplify entirely, relaunch the application, and try typing your institution's name again.

iPad Troubleshooting

If you are using the Examplify app on an iPad and your institution's name will not appear, the cause is usually a setting rather than a technical glitch.

Note: Some institutions do not allow exams to be taken on iPads. If your institution name does not show up on an iPad, it typically means iPad usage is disabled by your institution.

What you should do:

  • This is an administrative block controlled entirely by your institution. ExamSoft Support cannot change this setting for you.
  • Contact your instructor or your institution's testing coordinator immediately to verify whether iPad testing is permitted for your specific exam. If it is not, you will need to switch to a compatible Windows or Mac device.

Still Not Loading? If you have switched networks, disabled all VPNs, and verified app permissions but the list remains empty, please visit the official ExamSoft Help Center for advanced network troubleshooting or contact your institution's IT Helpdesk for immediate hands-on support.
